Losing weight is a struggle for most people. The difficulty behind maintaining a diet plan is how to keep motivated. Autom is designed to do just that. “It’s trying to keep someone motivated to stick with their diet for a longer period of time. The average diet is very short. The big challenge for people is sticking with it for months or years,” said Autom inventor, Cory Kidd. “And the best way to do that is to have a personal trainer that dieters can talk to every day. It’s expensive and most people just don’t have the time to do something like that.” Autom follows dieters’ progress by asking what they have eaten daily, how much exercise they have done and once a week how much they weigh. The robot then processes (处理) the information and suggests changes in the person’s behavior for better results. In his research, Kidd monitored a group of 45 overweight people for six weeks. He gave one group a robot, one group computer software the same as the robot’s programming and the last group a diary to keep a record of their diet and exercise. Six weeks later, he found that the group with Autom kept to their diet, on average, at least five weeks longer. Hence, the research shows a robot may be a more effective machine for conveying (传达) the behavior change message. However, for most people, losing weight remains hard. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one billion of the world’s adult population are overweight. It is also known that of those who lose weight, 90% to 95% are unable to keep the weight off long-term. 56. According to the passage, most people have difficulty in losing weight, because ______. A. their average diet is too short B. they don’t have a personal trainer C. they lack motivation for maintaining a diet plan D. they don’t have enough money to buy Autom 57. What does the author compare Autom to? A. Intuitive Automata B. a personal trainer C. computer software D. an organization 58. Cory Kidd did the research that involved 45 overweight people to show that ______. A. Autom is the best at helping people lose weight B. Autom is more advanced than computer software C. computer software is totally useless D. it is difficult to keep a record of a diet plan 59. The author uses the World Health Organization’s data to ______. A. persuade overweight people to buy Autom B. state the fact that most people fail to lose weight C. show the reason why it is difficult to lose weight D. tell readers how to keep the weight off long-term B When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer. Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note — “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery” — and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically (魔术般地) appear. All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete (竞争). Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service. Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk. 60. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer _________. A. to please his mother B. to satisfy his curiosity C. to pay for the delivery D. to show his magical power 61. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house? A. He wanted to have tea there. B. He was a respectable person. C. He was fully trusted by the family. D. He was treated as a family member. 62. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist? A. It has been driven out of the market. B. Nobody wants to be a milkman now. C. Its service is getting poor. D. It is forbidden by law. 63. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box? A. He planted flowers in it. B. He wanted to tell interesting stories. C. He needed it for his milk bottles. D. He missed the good old days. D Did you ever wonder whether your unhappy kid was experiencing teenage depression? Of course, most teenagers feel unhappy at times. Yet findings show that one out of every eight teenagers has been depressed. So if your kid’s unhappiness lasts for more than two weeks, it may be time to seek help from a health expert. There are many reasons why a teenager might become depressed. For example, teenagers can develop a feeling of worthlessness. School performance, social status with peers and family life each can have a major effect on how a teenager feels. Sometimes, teenage depression may result from environmental stress. Often, kids with teenage depression will have a noticeable change in their thinking and behavior. They may close their bedroom door after school and stay in their room for hours. Kids with teenage depression may sleep a lot, have a change in eating habits, and may even show criminal (犯罪的) behavior such as shoplifting. Depression usually starts between the ages of 15 and 30 and runs in families. In fact, teenage depression may be more common among teenagers who have a family history of depression. There aren’t any medical tests that can recognize depression. Health experts determine if a teenager has depression by conducting interviews and psychological tests. There are a variety of methods used to treat depression, including psychotherapy (心理疗法). Family therapy may be helpful if family conflict is leading to a teenager’s depression. The teenager will also need support from family or teachers to help with school or peer problems. Sometimes staying in hospital may be required if the teenager has serious depression. 68. This passage is written to ________. A. tell readers how to keep away from depression B. tell readers something about teenage depression C. ask parents to pay more attention to their own depression D. encourage readers to get rid of depression 69. Which of the following reasons for teenage depression is NOT mentioned? A. Working too hard at school. B. Feeling worthless. C. Environmental stress D. Family problems. 70. The author would probably agree that _______. A. taking medicine doesn’t help a teenager with depression B. medical tests can be used to recognize depression C. a teenager whose parents had depression is likely to have depression too D. staying in hospital will do no good to teenagers with depression 71. How do health experts determine teenage depression? A. do necessary medical tests B. get them observed in hospital C. ask them whether they stole anything D. do interviews and psychological tests. E With international experiences ranging from England to Uganda, I was unsure what to expect of China. What I’ve found is sometimes a mix of developed and developing worlds. But China is in a period of rapid development and Chinese people are aware they are stepping onto the world stage. If you want to be part of history, this is the time to be in China. Though I certainly had to adjust to Chinese culture, the transition (过渡) was made much easier because the growing internationalism of major Chinese cities means it is possible to find nearly any product I want. In addition, it is quite possible to find an apartment with equipment to rival (媲美) any in the West. One shortcoming: most Chinese homes do not have ovens, but I bought a rice cooker with a cake button, so I can still use my mother’s banana bread recipe. Outside of Western comforts, China offers its own charms. People are generally friendly and quite willing to wait patiently as I attempt to communicate. The metro (地铁) system in Shanghai is the best in the world, and the transportation is convenient. And there certainly is no lack of tempting destinations! I’ve been to Hainan’s emerald beaches, Harbin’s famous ice sculpture festival, Hong Kong’s noodle bars and fish markets. With three weeks off during Chinese New Year, plus regular weekend trips, there is plenty of time to explore. But the best part of my experience in China is undoubtedly teaching bright, motivated students at Cambridge International Centre (CIC). Truly, it is a joy to walk into a classroom full of pupils who are ready and willing to learn and who hardly ever present any kind of behavior problem. At the beginning, my greatest challenge was encouraging students to ask questions and form their own opinions; now it is my greatest joy to watch them debate environmental issues. As in any city, there are challenges to daily life. As in any school, difficulties and conflicts arise. But overall, I can’t suggest Shanghai and Cambridge International Centre more highly. 72. According to the author, China ________. A. is still a developing country despite its great progress B. is fast becoming an internationally influential country C. is his next destination to go teaching D. has greatly changed beyond expectation 73. By saying “And there certainly is no lack of tempting destinations!” (Para. 3) the author means _______. A. there are many modern cities like Shanghai in China B. the convenient transportation system promotes tourism C. he will go to many cities to work D. China has many attractive tourist spots 74. We can know from the passage that the author _______. A. is an employee of CIC working in Shanghai B. is an experienced English teacher from England C. can’t buy the food he used to eat in China D. thinks Shanghai is a perfect city to live in 75. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. The author goes to travel almost every weekend. B. The author has completely been used to Chinese culture. C. Shanghai has the most advanced public transportation system in the world. D. The author thinks Chinese students always have good manners. Camping wild is a wonderful way to experience the natural world and, at its best, it makes little environmental influence. But with increasing numbers of people wanting to escape into the wilderness, it is becoming more and more important to camp unobtrusively (不引人注目地) and leave no mark. Wild camping is not permitted in many places, particularly in crowded lowland Britain. Wherever you are, find out about organizations responsible for managing wild spaces, and contact them to find out their policy on camping and shelter building. For example, it is fine to camp wild in remote parts of Scotland, but in England you must ask the landowner’s permission, except in national parks. Camping is about having relaxation, sleeping outdoors, experiencing bad weather, and making do without modern conveniences. A busy, fully-equipped campsite (野营地) seems to go against this, so seek out smaller, more remote places with easy access to open spaces and perhaps beaches. Better still, find a campsite with no road access: walking in makes a real adventure. Finding the right spot to camp is the first step to guaranteeing a good night’s sleep. Choose a campsite with privacy and minimum influence on others and the environment. Try to use an area where people have obviously camped before rather than creating a new spot. When camping in woodland, avoid standing dead trees, which may fall on a windy night. Avoid animal runs and caves, and possible homes of biting insects. Make sure you have most protection on the windward (上风向的) side. If you make a fire, do so downwind of your shelter. Always consider what influence you might have on the natural world. Avoid damaging plants. A good campsite is found, not made—changing it should be unnecessary. Topic Tips on wild camping Advantages of wild camping ☆ Experiencing the nature. ☆ (76) ________ campers themselves. ☆ Making a real adventure. (77) ________ of wild camping if the campers are careless ☆ (78) ________ the environment. ☆ Disturbing the wild animals. ☆ (79) ________ a fire. ☆ Damaging plants.
