If you're not sure what solar energy is all about, here are a few of the basics to get you up to speed. The many different technologies are designed to take energy from the sun and change it into energy to provide heating ,cooling, electricity, and more. Technologies to convert (转变) this energy include things such as solar hot water, solar electricity, lighting systems, and space heating systems. One of the main reasons most people want to use solar energy is for the savings. The use of these technologies can save money on monthly bills by powering your electricity through the sun's energy instead of buying energy from fossil fuels. If you live in a sunny area and you do don't use all the energy a solar system produces, you could even make a little money by selling the extra energy to those who need it. Renewable energy will also give you a more stable price for your monthly bills. For most people, the cost of energy has gone up over the past few years, and there are not many signs it will go down any time soon. People who buy or lease (租用) a solar system can take control of their costs and not be at the mercy of (在…支配下) the continually rising prices. The high cost of fixing solar equipment at home is the main reason why most people have not been able to use this type of renewable energy, but there are ways to lower the expenses. Solar leasing is good choice; you can pay a monthly lease fee instead of buying the solar equipment. So, if you haven't fixed it, take one now. Some companies also offer money to help those people that can't afford to buy or lease the entire solar system. The savings that you will see on your monthly bills makes going “green” good for your wallet as well as the environment. 56. At present most people know it is important to ______. A. discover more and more fossil fuels B. save solar energy as much as possible C. use other energy to replace fossil fuels D. use solar energy instead of using any fossil fuel 57. What does the underlined phrase “up to speed” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. To reach the fastest speed. B. To realized the planned goals. C. To help finish the new task. D. To learn about something new. 58. What is one of the main reasons why people use solar energy? A. Making money. B. Saving money C. Preventing power failure. D. Providing enough electricity. 59. We can learn from the passage that ______. A. some poor people are helped to fix the solar system financially B. the cost of energy will go down sometime in the future C. fixing a solar system is affordable for most people D. the energy a solar system produces is too much to be used up B Traffic jam and cities, it seems, go hand in hand. Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic; but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportation planners, and public officials responsible for transportation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve traffic jam. But is traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that traffic jam is an unpreventable by-product of successful cities, and view the “traffic problem” in a different light. Cities exist because they promote social interactions and economic transactions. Traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited spaces. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying (衰退) cities don't have much traffic. New York and Los Angeles are America's most crowded cities. But if you want access to major brokerage houses (经纪行),you will find them easier to reach m crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your firm needs access to post-production film editors or satellite-guidance (卫星导航) engineers, you will reach than more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere. Despite traffic jam, a larger number and wider variety of social interactions and economic transactions can be made perfect in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this light, traffic jam is an unfortunate result of prosperity (繁荣), not a cause of economic decline (下降) and urban decay. So while we can consider traffic jam as increasing costs on the areas of big cities, the costs of inaccessibility (交通不便)in uncrowded places are almost certainly greater. There is no doubt that traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That's why, for now, we don、see people and capital streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like California, and Illinois. 60. We can conclude from the first paragraph that	______. A. traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of die big city B. traffic jam seems to be very difficult to deal with C. if traffic engineers try their best, traffic jam can be solved D. public officials are always criticized for misusing their power 61. According to the passage, what's the author's opinion towards traffic jam? A. In cities, traffic jam is unavoidable. B. Traffic jam is both a sign of failure and a sign of success. C. Traffic jam is the result of successful cities. D. For a successful city, traffic jam is not unpreventable. 62. According to this article, which statement about “New York” and “Los Angeles” is true? A. The traffic jam in the two cities has been worsened. B. New York and Los Angeles are the least successful cities in the US. C. It is easier to reach major brokerage houses in the two cities than in other cities. D. Despite the traffic jam in LA, you’ll find a satellite-guidance engineer more quickly there. 63. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Traffic jam has caused terrible bad effects in cities such as Bangkok and Lagos. B. The traffic jam in Son Francisco has resulted in the capital becoming empty. C. The traffic jam level in Jakarta is lower than that in the US. D. California is as crowded und successful as San Francisco. C When John Milton, writer of "Paradise Lost", entered Cambridge University, in 1625, he was already skilled in Latin after seven years of studying it as his second language at St. Paul's School, London. Like all English boys who prepared for college in grammar schools, he had learned not only to read Latin but also to speak and write it smoothly and correctly. His pronunciation of Latin was English, however, and seemed to have sounded strange to his friends when he later visited Italy. Schoolboys gained their skill in Latin in a bitter way. They kept in mind the rules to make learning by heart easier. They first made a word-for-word translation and then an idiomatic translation into English. As they increased their skill, they translated their English back into Latin without referring to the book and then compared their translation with the original. The schoolmaster was always at hand to encourage them. All schoolmasters believed Latin should be beaten in. After several years of study, the boys began to write compositions in imitation of the Latin writers they read. And as they began to read Latin poems, they began to write poems in Latin. Because Milton was already a poet at ten, his poems were much better than those painfully put together by the other boys. During the seven years Milton spent at university, he made regular use of his command of Latin. He wrote some excellent Latin poems, which he published among his works in 1645. 64. What does the passage mainly tell about? A. How John Milton wrote "Paradise Lost". B. How John Milton studied Latin. C. How John Milton became famous. D. How John Milton became a poet. 65. Which of the following is true of John Milton's pronunciation of Latin? A. It has a strong Italian accent. B. It has an uncommon accent. C. It was natural and easy to understand. D. It was bad and difficult to understand. 66. It can be inferred from the passage that ______. A. Milton's training in Latin was similar to that of the other boys B. Milton hadn't learned any foreign language except Latin before going to college C. Milton's Italian friends helped him with Latin when talking D. Milton's classmates learned Latin harder but worse than Milton. D We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn't even lift her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth open in surprise, mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, mum nodded and said, "Very dirty floors." "Yes. I'm glad they've finally decided to clean them," the nurse answered. She looked at mum and said, "But aren't you working late?" Mum just pushed harder, each swipe of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book. After a long time mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, mum bowed politely to the nurse and said, "Thank you." Outside, mum told me: "Dagmar is found. No fever." "You saw her, mum?" "Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will stop worrying as well. It's a fine hospital. But such floors! A mop is no good. You need a brush." 67. When she took a mop from the small room, what mum really wanted to do was ______. A. to clean the floor B. to please the nurse C. to see a patient D. to surprise the story-teller 68. When the nurse talked to mum, she thought mum was a ______. A. the story-teller's sister B. mum's friend C. the story-teller's classmate D. dad's boss 71. Which of the following words best describes Mum? A. strange B. warm-hearted C. clever D. hard-working E Say you meet with difficulty, what's the first thing you do? Call your best friend and ask for help? It turns out that doing this may be better for you than you think. Researchers find that friendship has a big influence on your health, well-being and business. One study from scientists recently found that older people with a large circle of friends were 22% less likely to die during a 10-year period than those with fewer friends. Other researchers discovered that having a strong social network could improve brain health as we age. Even more interesting, feeling close to your friends may give you a different view on things. Researchers gathered 34 college students out side and asked them to estimate the steepness (估陡峭程度) of a hill after climbing it. Those standing with friends gave lower estimates, and the longer the friends had known each other, the less steep the hill appeared. What is the reason that friends can make obstacles, seem less difficult? “People with stronger friendship networks feel that there is someone they can turn to,” said Karen A. Roberto, director of the center of the hospital at Virginia Tech. "Friendship is a valued resource (宝贵的资源)” It is truly the fact. Friends make your life better. They provide support in hard times. They inspire you to make changes in your life, encourage you to set goals and cheer you on every step of the way until you reach them. Want to find out more about the power of friendship? Read "Be a Better Friend", "Make New Friends" and "Keep the Old". 72. According to the author, if you've lost your job you should _____. A. turn to your best friend B. ask for advice from your teacher C. face it bravely by yourself D. ask your parents for help 73. We can learn from the study in Paragraph 2 that ______. It is more important than ever to be successful at school if you hope to have a chance in the job market afterwards. It's no wonder that many young people worry about letting down their parents, their classmates and themselves. In trying to please everyone, they take on too many tasks until it becomes harder and harder to balance homework, parties, sports activities and friends. The result is that young people suffer from stress. There are different ways of dealing with stress. Everyone knows that caffeine, whether it is in the form of coffee or soft drinks, keeps you awake and active. But caffeine is a drug which can become addictive (上瘾). In the end, like other drugs, caffeine only leads to more stress. A better way to deal with stress is to exercise. Research has proved that physical exercise is a good release for stress, because it increases certain chemicals in the brain which calm you down. Making sure you get enough sleep is also an important way of avoiding stress and of staying healthy and full of energy. Another way to avoid stress is to manage your time effectively. It is better to do a few tasks really well than lots of tasks badly. Know your limits and try not to take on too much. Finally, if it all gets beyond your control, don't panic or get hysterical (歇斯底里).Find the time to sit down quietly and breathe deeply for ten to twenty minutes. Do this regularly, and it will help you calm down. So I can keep energetic, listen carefully to the teacher and make the best of the class. If I have any question, I will turn to teachers for help in time. After adjusting my study, fortunately, I can keep up with my classmates now. I have different learning methods this term and have different results. In my opinion, it is important to form a good habit of study. 8
