In 1986, when she left Portugal and arrived with her family in Canada, her plan was simple. “I didn’t think about school; I just thought about work, since that’s what you do as a new immigrant(移民),’’ she says. Maria started out cleaning offices, and then worked in a bakery. In 2002, she became the Plant Manager Assistant, and was hoping to continue to rise. Unfortunately, she kept training plant managers without going anywhere. She knew that it was because she didn’t have any education. “I was very frustrated,” Maria says. “My husband said to me, ‘Why don’t you realize the dream you’ve had all these years?’ ’’ That dream was to finish school — something Maria had to give up at a young age when her father passed away — and she began to pursue it after quitting her job in September 2007. Maria’s interests led her toward care giving. Her first step was to take English assessment test to determine if she could enroll (入学). Indeed, she failed. However, it didn’t prevent her from enrolling in the English Essentials course, from which she graduated with the third best mark. With that kind of accomplishment, she started classes for the PSW Certificate program in September 2008. “Since I was used to working very long days, I decided to take some computer courses as well,” she says. “After all, you never know what kind of job is in your future, or what kind of changes technology will lead to.” She also joined a volunteer program, Storefront Humber, a home-support service company that assists the elderly with meals and daily activities. “There was always somebody there to motivate me and to be patient with me while I was learning,’’ she says. “To me, you’re never too old to go to school. Education means a lot. If I hadn’t gone to school, I wouldn’t have all of this.’’ 21. When Maria Almeida first arrived in Canada, she wanted to _____. A. get a job fit for a new immigrant B. receive continuing education C. help others continue their education D. work as a Personal Support Worker 22. The underlined word “it” in the third paragraph refers to _____. A. her dream B. her job C. her interest D. her mark 23. Which of the following is TRUE about Maria, according to the text? A. She quit working as the Plant Manager Assistant when her father passed away. B. The reason she couldn’t get promoted(晋升) was that she hadn’t received any education. C. She took some computer courses after finishing the PSW Certificate program. D. She organized a volunteer program to assist the elderly with daily activities. 24. Maria believes that _____. A. if one dreams, everything is possible B. helping others is helping oneself indeed C. it is difficult to learn to be patient with others D. education can actually make a big difference B Children are losing the ability to play properly because they are being given too many toys and games, according to a new research. The studies show that children, especially those under five, are often overwhelmed (不知所措) and actually play less than those with fewer toys. It may even harm their development. The studies show that giving children too many toys or toys of the wrong type can actually be doing them harm. They get overwhelmed and cannot concentrate on anything long enough to learn from it. The conclusions have been backed up by British research looking at children with relatively fewer toys, whose parents spend more time reading, singing or playing with them. It showed such children surpass (胜过) youngsters from richer backgrounds, even those who could use computers. Some parents notice the ill effect early. Orhan Ismail, a researcher saw a change for the worse in Cameron, his 10-month-old son, after he was given a lot of toys last Christmas. Ismail said, “If there are too many toys in front of him, he will just keep flitting(掠过) around them and then end up going off and finding something like a slipper to play with. Now we just get out one or two toys and hide the rest in a box.” Alexander and her husband also decided to limit the toys their 6 daughters play with. She believed many toys limit children’s imaginations. She said, “A Barbie can only work as a Barbie. But a cardboard box can become anything. The only limitations are in the child’s mind.” Experts hesitate to put a figure on the number of toys children should have, but many believe two dozen is enough for children of preschool age. 25. From which paragraph can we learn that “British research group has been in favour of the conclusion”? A. Paragraph 3. B. Paragraph 4. C. Paragraph 5. D. Paragraph 6. 26. In the writer’s opinion, a Barbie _____. A. can attract more attention from children than a cardboard box B. can work more than a Barbie C. may become anything else such as a cardboard D. may keep children from further imaginations 27. Which of the following is TRUE about toys given to children? A. too many toys will help children develop wide interests. B. One or two toys at a time will help children concentrate. C. They are distributed all over the world and are believed to have been in existence before the dinosaurs. In fact, scientists guess that the earliest shark species were swimming in the earth’s waters some 420 million years ago. The shark species are diverse in terms of their physical appearance, diets and habits. Different shark species prefer different waters, but, generally, sharks are found all over the world. They live anywhere between relatively shallow depths and about 2,000 meters from the surface. Some can even be found on the ocean floor. The shark’s body is streamlined (流线型的) to allow these effective hunters to slide through the water smoothly. Sharks that swim around on the ocean floor usually have flat bodies, allowing them to slide across the sand unnoticed. Unlike other fish, which have both bones and cartilage (软骨), sharks only have cartilage, increasing their flexibility and decreasing their weight to allow even faster movement. Their replaceable rows of teeth are used only for catching their prey (猎物) and tearing off large pieces of flesh. They do not chew their food, but swallow it whole. All sharks are meat eaters. However, their diets are varied. Sharks are believed to be relatively intelligent. They can learn to adopt new patterns of behavior and recognize certain people and objects. There have been several shark attacks on people, usually resulting in severe injuries or death. The bull shark is the most common killer for bathers, as it swims in the shallow waters in which people usually swim. To avoid attacks by such sharks, it is necessary for bathers to stay within the swimming confines (界限) set by lifeguards and for bathers to exit the water immediately if they have a bleeding injury. Sharks continue to be threatened by hunting and pollution, yet remain one of the most fascinating (迷人的) creatures. 32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. All shark species have the same diets and habits. B. Sharks came into existence later than dinosaurs. C. A wide diversity of shark species exists in the world. D. Sharks usually live 2,000 meters under the water’s surface. 33. Unlike other fish, sharks have cartilage, which _____. a. makes them more flexible b. makes them lighter c. helps them move faster d. makes them more fascinating A. a b c B. a b d C. a c d D. b c d 34. What can we learn from the passage? A. Bull sharks often swim down to 2,000 meters. B. Sharks’ teeth are used for catching their prey. C. Nearly all kinds of sharks like to attack people. D. The shark’s body makes it easier to catch. 35. The third paragraph is mainly about _____. A. Sharks’ physical characteristics B. Sharks’ habits C. Sharks’ bone structure D. the function of sharks’ teeth 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Restore Balance in Life Many of us give our time and energy generously to our family members, friends, and co-workers, but often ignore our own needs. 36 Here some people share the experiences that made them realize they had to start taking care of themselves — and what they’re doing about it. Lighten Your Load Before you can take care of anyone else, you need to be able to care for yourself. The topic of my speech today is “My Attitude to Pursuit of Fashion in School”. Now in our school there is a hot pursuit of fashion. Some students live a very expensive life. They have the same hairstyles as their favorite stars and wear top brands of clothes. Some use expensive mobile phones. The reasons why they do so are as follows. Firstly, they hope to look smart and special. Secondly, they want to win others’ admiration and respect. In addition, it makes them feel cool. In my opinion, it is the inner beauty rather than our appearance that makes us respectable. It will make great sense to save the money to help those in need. That’s all. Thank you for your listening. 听力原文 Text 1 M: Do you think we can catch the train if we keep driving at this speed? W: Yes, but I’m afraid the road may become crowded soon. In this short talk, I’d like to tell you about my favorite store – Harrods, the huge department store in London. The building is beautiful, especially at night, when there are hundreds of lights outside. It’s fascinating. It’s open every day of the week, including Sundays. There’re seven floors, I think. You can even buy a famous green Harrods shopping bag. And Harrods can order anything you want! You can buy anything you can imagine in Harrods. It’s famous for its fantastic food halls, and there’re about 25 cafes and restaurants. The most interesting thing is that there’s even a doctor in the store as well as a bank. To finish, I think Harrods is the best department store in the world. That’s all. I hope you enjoy my little talk and it can help you get familiar with Harrods in some way. Thank you. 资源来源网络,https://www.kuaiwen.net ·18·
